Netscape Messenger - Offline Mode

The purpose of this procedure is to show users how to set up Netscape Communicator for Offline use.
This allows you to read and compose email messages, while not connected to the network.

Email messages written while in Offline mode will be saved to the "Unsent Messages" folder, also referred to as the Outbox folder. Once you have connected to the network, you can then send them.

Setting Offline Preferences

1. Launch Communicator.
2. Go to the "Edit" menu and select "Preferences".
3. Expand "Mail and Newsgroups" and click on "Mail Servers".

4. Highlight the IMAP server and click "Edit".

5. Click the "IMAP" tab and select "Mark new folders for offline download", as shown below.

6. Click "OK" to close the "Mail Server Properties" window.
7. Click on "Offline" and select the following:

  • "Ask me"
  • "Ask me if I want to send my unsent messages"
  • "Prompt me to synchronize my messages"

8. Expand "Offline" and click on "Download".

9. Click on the "Select" button and select the folders you wish to access offline.

10. Click "OK" to close the "Select Items for Download" window.

Working Offline

To work offline you will need to first perform a synchronisation of the selected messages. To do this you can either go to File|Offline|Synchronise, or simply exit Communicator.

When exiting Communicator, you will be prompted to synchronise as shown below.

If you click on "Yes", the "Sychronize Offline Items" dialog box will appear, from which you can modify the items you wish to synchronise.

At this stage you can choose to send any unsent messages.

Click on Synchronise button when ready. The synchronisation process downloads your selected email along with their attachments.

Note: Your mail is not deleted from mail as a result of the synchronisation. A copy will remain on the server until you delete it.

Later, when launching Communicator, you will be prompted to either work Offline or Online. Once in Communicator, you can change your option by clicking on the Online/Offline icon at the bottom left hand corner of the window.
