Server-side Spam filtering instructions
Enabling Spam filtering on your Monash email account is an easy 6-step process.
Email that has been 'detected' as Spam by the ITS email servers will be automatically
filtered into a folder of your choice which is automatically cleaned up after
a certain period of time (depending on which folder you selected).
NOTE: If you forward your student or staff email to another email account then the Spam
filtering will NOT be applied. Only email delivered into your student or staff email account
will be filtered.
Update: Server-side filtering is now enabled for all email accounts.
Step 1.
Visit the following page. Log in with your Monash email username and password (this link will open a new window):
https://messaging.its.monash.edu.au/mail/filter/
Step 2.
Click on the 'Spam Filtering' Link on the Left menu-bar
Step 3.
Select the folder for which the spam emails are delivered to from the "Move spam to" drop-down list.
ITS recommends that
you use the default settings of the 'Spam-30' folder.
If the chosen 'Spam' folder doesn't already exist, it will be automatically created when you enable/update the Spam
filtering.
Step 4.
Choose your Spam Threshold level.
ITS recommends that
you use the default settings of 'Medium (5 star)' threshold.
Step 5.
Click on the 'Enable' button. This will return to the main filter managment page.
Step 6.
Press the "Save changes" to start your spam filter.
NOTE: Staff may need to 'restart' their email client (e.g. Netscape Mail/Mozilla Email/Microsoft Outlook) to see the 'Spam' folder that is created by the email server.
NOTE: You will need to subscribe to each newly created folder in your mail client. To subsribe to a folder in Mozilla Thunderbird, go to File -> Subscribe and click Refresh. Select the folder you wish to subscibe to and then click Subscibe. Please note you are already subscribed to folders with a tick. The '+' symbol to the left of a folder indicates sub-folders. Click this symbol to expand and display any sub-folders.

Email address white-listing
With any Spam-detection system occassionally emails that you want to read (non-Spam) are marked
as Spam and therefore were mistakenly filtered into your Spam folder. These emails are known
as 'false-positives'. If there are emails from a certain individual sender (e.g. my.friend@hotmail.com) or
from an entire email domain e.g. virginblue.com.au that you want to avoid ANY spam filtering, you
can accomplish this though the use of a 'white-list'.
Trusted email addresses white-listing
If there is a particular email sender who is being marked as Spam and who always sends with the
same FROM address, you can add an individual white-list entry for that address e.g.
my.friend@hotmail.com
Step 1.
Visit the following page. Log in with your Monash email username and password (this link will open a new
window):
http://messaging.its.monash.edu.au/mail/filter
Step 2.
Select the "Whitelists" option from the left menu bar.
Step 3.
Add in the email address of the sender who you wish to whitelist into the "Trusted email addresses:" text box.
If there was anything incorrect about the formatting of the email domain that you entered, an error message will
be provided pointing out the entry with the error. You can then go back and fix the bad entry.
Trusted email domains white-listing
The email domain of an email address is the value on the right hand side of the @ symbol e.g. the domain of the address
jane.citizen@its.monash.edu.au is its.monash.edu.au
If you receive email from a entire email domain which keeps being marked as spam (e.g. virginblue.com.au) then you can
choose to 'whitelist' the entire domain for simplicity rather then having to specify multiple full email addresses such
as (newsletter@virginblue.com.au, bookings@virginblue.com.au, offers@virginblue.com.au).
Step 1.
Visit the following page. Log in with your Monash email username and password (this link will open a new window):
http://messaging.its.monash.edu.au/mail/filter
Step 2.
Select the "Whitelists" option from the left menu bar.
Step 3.
Add in the email domain to the "Trusted email domains:" text box and click Update.
If there was anything incorrect about the formatting of the email domain that you entered, an error message will
be provided pointing out the entry with the error. You can then go back and fix the bad entry.
