Latest technology adopted by new studentsApril 18, 2006
An online survey of all new students shows that Monash students continue to adopt the latest IT services and computer technology for their home. This year is the second year that the mandatory, but short, survey was conducted in January and February as part of the procedure new students follow when they obtain their Authcate computer accounts. The number of students with access to a computer at home - 97% - has not changed since the 2005 survey was conducted, with 88 per cent of students working on a PC. In addition, 63% of students worked from a desktop, while 34% had a portable computer. The adoption of broadband access has risen significantly since 2005, with 62% of students reporting access at home for 2006, compared to 47% the previous year. In addition, 82 per cent of students have installed anti-virus software. The survey audience of 13,216 participants included students currently enrolled in their first year at Monash and students who received offers from Monash and opted to obtain a computer account, but may not have converted their offers to enrolment. A full copy of the report and results, including faculty breakdowns, is available online. For further information, please contact Client Communications Officer, Diane Lee .
